Acupuncture Provides Relief for Chronic Neck Pain

Susan, a 38-year-old officer worker, had been suffering from chronic neck pain for over two years. The constant aching, tightness and limited range of motion was taking a toll on her daily life. She tried over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, massage therapy, and stretching exercises, but nothing provided lasting relief.

At her wit’s end, Susan decided to try acupuncture on the recommendation of a friend who had success with it for back pain. She started seeing a licensed acupuncturist twice a week for the first four weeks.

During each session, the acupuncturist inserted very thin needles into specific points along Susan’s neck, shoulders, back and legs based on an assessment of her condition through traditional Chinese medicine principles. The needles were left in for about 30 minutes while Susan relaxed.

After just a few weeks, Susan began noticing improvements. Her typical neck pain level had decreased from an 8/10 down to a 5/10 on a pain scale. The tightness was diminishing and she could turn her head with more range of motion.

Susan continued the acupuncture treatments once a week for another two months. By the end of the third month, her pain levels were down to an occasional mild 2/10 pain rating. The chronic aching and limitation she had suffered with for years was finally gone.

At her follow-up six months later, Susan’s neck pain remained successfully managed as long as she attended monthly maintenance acupuncture sessions. She reported a 90% overall improvement compared to when her neck pain was at its worst.

While not a cure, Susan found acupuncture provided excellent long-term relief and management of her chronic neck pain when other conventional methods had failed. She was grateful to regain normal neck mobility and function without daily discomfort.
